pARTicipate

This Saturday is my grandfather’s 90th birthday. (Hi Papa!) It is also one of the most fun, interesting, and anticipated annual events in Halifax. This  Saturday, October 15 night is Nocturne – Art at Night. From 6pm – midnight our city of Halifax is alive with art and culture projects, installations, and shows open to everyone. If you haven’t been, you need to clear your schedule pronto and make plans stat.

Love, Me Boutique is not only a big fan of Nocturne, we are also one of the Nocturne sites. Every year since we have opened, we have concentrated our efforts on having an interactive activity as well as having the shop open for visitors. In our first year, we had a DIY 1″ button station. In year two, we hosted a portraiture artist (Zach Gough) and a live concert from Mary Stewart. In year three, last year, we pulled off a ridiculously fun photographic session complete with props with help from our friend Shelagh Duffett.

Karen, of Belltristic Buttons, helps a young Nocturne visitor cut out his image and make his 1″ button in 2008.

2010 Nocturne characters, complete with zany props, having a gas in our photobooth.

This year, we are doing something a little bit different.

With a love of smart street art, a crush on chalkboards and chalking, a love of the handwritten love letter, an insistence that Love, Me Boutique have a pARTicipation effort in Nocturne, our store will physically be closed BUT we will have chalk out for Nocturne participants to take on their journey Saturday evening.

This year Love, Me is encouraging pARTicipants to chalk love letters to Halifax / citizens of Halifax throughout their travels Saturday evening. That simple. You. Others. Some chalk. And hopefully, some beautiful messages throughout the city.

hello beautiful by me.

I hope you all have a great night this Saturday. Bundle up, grab a warm bevie and stop by the shop for some chalk. (First come. First serve.) And then get out there and make some art.

Spring Art: Shelagh Duffett and Hillary Webb

April 22, 2010 – At Love, Me, springtime means more than just a change in weather (although, we are happy to see the sun). It also means a change in the art on our walls. The artists are completely different from one another: one creates bright folk art paintings, while the other works in textiles. Both are perfect for spring.

When you first walk in the store, you can’t miss the colourful paintings of flowers by Shelagh Duffett.

You may recognize Shelagh’s work. We’ve been carrying her smaller paintings, as well as her photo cards and pocket mirrors, for some time now.  We like her work so much that we asked her if she wanted to create some bigger pieces for the store.  The paintings are fantastic and brighten up the wall over one of the fireplaces.  When she’s not creating art for us, Shelagh writes a popular blog called Alice in Paris Loves Art and Tea.  You should check it out just for her amazing photography.

Over the second fireplace is an artist who is new to Love, Me.  Hillary Webb is a textile artist from Toronto. A graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design, Hillary is now based out of Halifax while she studies to be a librarian at Dalhousie

Her work is inspired by traditional textile techniques such as natural dyeing and hand embroidery. Hillary draws on influences such as natural order, chaos theory, geometry and astronomy. We think the trees in bloom and pretty birds make for a perfect piece of springtime art.

You can read about Hillary’s inspirations, processes and see more of her work on her blog.

oscars

February 22, 2008 – Oh boy! This weekend is the Oscars. Call me a dork but I get pretty excited about Oscar night. When I was a tween, my mom allowed me to stay up later than my normal 8 pm bedtime to watch a bit of the Oscars. We would curl up in our jammies and drink tea and watch the red carpet walk. During this period in my life, I fancied myself a thespian (or a writer or a dolphin trainer?) and thought that someday I too would rock the red carpet is some over-the-top gown. These days I like to partake in that same ritual of tea and jammies. I try to see at least a few of the nominated films but this year, time allowed only one – Juno. And I, like many others, hope it goes home with a couple of the golden boys. Go Ellen!

Speaking fashion (Oscars and fashion are like honey and toast)… in the shop we have some super fab (sorry getting my red carpet talk on) photography by Shelagh Duffett. She is a local folk artist and photographer. We have a number of her fashion window and shoe photographs among others. Come in and see them for yourself. I am loving this photo and let’s be honest, I am coveting those red clogs.
